Despite not being a fan of engineer I have quite many of them.Two of them are charr, one is asura and the other one is a sylvari (actually concepted as a mechavari/cybervari).Theoretically, every race could be fine with the right background to the character but I'd definitely go with either charr or asura if you're not into creating entire background stories.Hope that helps!
The charr are longstanding historical enemies of humans, fighting over territory ever since the events of Guild Wars 1, but are now at peace for the first time in decades - though not all of them agree that the peace is just or justified. If that's the case, I don't really think there is -- or should be -- any particular link between personality and race/class. There are certainly cultural differences that affect personality, but I just think it's boring and tired to fall into the "all charr are gruff and warlike" or "all asura are nerdy and arrogant" stereotypes, and adding

Asura: engineer fits this race thematically the best since Asura are all about technology and golem suits, but any of the other professions are fine too. Norn: ranger, warrior, guardian, and revenant fit the theme of the Norn the best imo. They’re all about communing with the spirits of the wild, nature and balance.
GW2 Efficiency records and shares various stats, but only from players who have given the site their info via an API code. So it's probably biased towards long-term or dedicated players who want to use the site for info on their account (like what to sell to get some quick gold or what you still need for a legendary weapon) and will be missing a lot of casual players who are fine without that
